News: July 2023

The Club’s senior athletes were ably supported by U17, U20 and Vet athletes at the third Southern Athletic League Match of the season at Stevenage on Sunday.

Up against Cambridge Harriers, Ryston, Thurrock, Kent A.C. and Bexley, the match was very close all afternoon, often with only a point separating teams.

The match started well for the home team with Ed Laws and Isaac Whitten picking up A 57.39 and B 64.39 wins in the 400H. There were also A 3m80 and B 3m20 wins in the PV for Dylan Baines and Bobby Pitman, for Ben Lewis 12m72 and Jacob Kinchin Smith 12m35 TJ, Women’s TJ Kerry Murch 10m54 and Fran Hart 10m43 , Kerry Murch 10m28 and Libby Taylor 8m94 in the SP Libby Taylor 49m and Kerry Murch 31m42in the HT and Kerry Murch 39m24 and Kachi Dike 23m69 in the JT. Individual A wins came from Jacob Kinchin Smith 200m – 22.26, Tommy Lee 2.01.49 and Fran Hart 2.31.44 800m and Aimie Taylor 3m PV. Rebecca Scott won the B LJ 4m5. Also competing were Rhys Samuel 100, 200, 400 LJ and sprint relay, Luka Rodgers-Ezewuike 100m, Owen Watkins 800m, Samuel Dear 1500m, Craig Cartier 800m, 3000m, Chris Westcott 3000m, Steve Mayfield SP, DT, HT, JT, Edward Turner JT, Bethany Joseph 100m, Martina Barber 100m, LJ, Annabel Howells 200m, Kirsten Morley 400m and Sandra Reed 400, 800, 110H, 400H, HJ

The 4 x 400m relay was the last event of the day. U17 Ben Lewis with U20’s William Galliford, Ed Laws and Jacob Kinchin Smith ran the fastest time in recent years to smash the Club’s U20 record by 6 seconds. Cambridge 1st, Thurrock 2nd, SNHAC/HAWCS 3rd, Bexley 4th, Kent A.C 5th and Ryston 6th.

Jacob Kinchin Smith for Man of the Match for his 200m and Libby Taylor was Woman of the Match for her HT.

Team Manager Rhys Samuel was delighted with the result and team spirit and is looking forward to seeing everyone in action again at the last SAL match in Woodford on the 19th August.

Saturday 8th July 2023

Competing at the English Schools Athletics Championships in Birmingham Senior Girl Jess Astill won her heat of the 400m on Friday and went on to come second in the final, bringing home the silver medal. Bobby Pitman threw a PB in the Inter Boys Discus to come 4th and Junior Boys Milan Snarskis and Zachary Czech came 7th and 9th in the Hammer competition.


Rebecca Scott LJ, Jacob Kinchin Smith 100m, 400m and LJ, Owen Watkins 1500m and Will Galliford SC were in action at Horspath, Oxford in the SEAA Inter County. The U20 Men and Women both teams came second. Results on the website.


Sixty-five young athletes from SNHAC and HAWCS travelled to Peterborough for the third EYAL match of the season.
A warm, windy day saw some great performances from the youngsters. U13 Hazel Spitzer had a good day winning the 1500m, DT and B string HJ. U15 Enid Whitten won the SP and DT and there were B wins from Millie Cunnington in the HJ and Rose Cook in the LJ. U17 Abigail Manson won the 1500m. Many of the Club’s U17 girls were not available for this match and team manager Melissa Doran was delighted that 5 of the U15 youngsters stepped up to support the U17 girls and also delighted with those girls who took on unfamiliar events to gain the team points. The U15 Girls won their age group.
In the Boys competitions there was a clean sweep in U13 200m, Nathanael Bullen and Jenson Norris winning A and B, Monty Norwood and Nathanael did the same in the HJ. There were B wins for Elijah Ragoobar in the LJ and Stanley Wilkinson in the SP. U15 Thomas Paymar won the 80H, Horatio De-Voytt and Tom won the A and B LJ, Milan Snarskis won the HT and there were B wins for Fred Dilley in the SP and Zachary Czech in the DT. In the U17 age group there were A wins from Jamie Timms in the HJ and JT along with a B win in the 100H. Bobby Pitman won the LJ. There were B wins from Calum Fairey in the 400m and Edward Turner in JT. Libby Taylor was delighted with the boy’s performances with a number of PB performances.
Ipswich won, SNHAC/ HAWCS 2nd, Thurrock 3rd, Cambridge 4th and Peterborough 5th.

Club athletes were in actions in Mannheim, Guildford, Cambridge and Stevenage over the weekend and Monday.
Competing in Mannheim as part of a GB U20 team Jessica Astill came second in the 400m running 54.97.
Also in action on Saturday were a dozen Club athletes at the Eastern Athletic Association Championships in Cambridge. Results not available at this time.
Sunday saw 15 athletes and officials travel to Guildford for the third Youth Development Match of the season. A major hold up on the A3 saw all visiting teams arrive late and the match start was delayed by one and a half hours. In spite of a tricky start, the team had a great day. There were wins for U17 Lily Cotter SP, Francesca Hart TJ, Imogen Rose B 800m and SP, U20 Kachi Dike JT and TJ and Tallulah Taylor B string Javelin. The girls also won the 4x300m relay. Abigail Manson doubled up to run the 800 and 1500m securing second in both. U17 Boys winners were Oscar O’Sullivan 1500m, Harrison Lund HJ and George Fifield SP. The were wins for U20 Jamie Joseph 100m, William Galliford 800m, Edward Laws 400H, Isaac Whitten 2k SC and TJ. Ed also won the B 200m and Isaac the B 400H and HJ. The match had a thrilling conclusion when U17’s George Fifield and Harrison Lund joined Will Galliford and Ed Laws in the U20 4x400 relay and overhauled a big gap on the last leg to beat Guildford on the line. Jacob Chappell in his first match for the Club was second in the 400m. The journey home proved less dramatic than the morning trip. The team finished second, 9 points behind Home Club Guildford and currently head the league. A good showing at the last match at Walton on the 30thJuly would secure promotion. In action at home on Monday saw 10 of the Clubs Veteran athletes in action in the Vets League. The women’s team came third and the men’s team eighth. There were wins for Sandra Reed 200m and HJ, Andrea Wescott HJ, second places finishes from Jenny Cotter 200m and the women’s 4x400m Team and third place finishes for Andrea in the 200m, Jenny in the 800m, Andrew Robson in the 200m and Craig Carter 800m. Also competing were Joylyn Saunder Mullins JT, Paul Pickard 800m, Paul Murray 3000m, Tim Saunders Mullins HT and Steve Mayfield DT. Full results on the Club Website.
